The Art of Steeping Chai (Tea): How to Brew the Perfect Cup
Share
A great cup of chai isn’t just a drink—it’s an experience. The warmth, the aroma, the smooth balance of spices and tea… all of it comes alive when the leaves are steeped the right way. Whether you’re new to loose-leaf chai or a lifelong tea lover, here’s a simple guide to help you brew chai that tastes rich, full-bodied, and beautifully fragrant every single time.
🌱 Start With Fresh, Quality Tea Leaves
At Cloud Coffee Chai, we promise quality leaves. Loose-leaf chai is full of natural oils that give your tea depth and flavor. Store your leaves in an airtight container away from heat, moisture, and sunlight. Fresh leaves = a better cup.
🔥 Water Temperature Matters
Boiling water (around 212°F / 100°C) is ideal for chai.
Black tea and spices need high heat to release their full flavor profile. If the water isn’t hot enough, the chai will taste flat and weak.
⏳ Steeping Time: Not Too Little, Not Too Long
The magic happens between 4–5 minutes.
- Less than 3 minutes → too light, under-extracted
- More than 5 minutes → bitter and overly strong
Let the tea dance in the water just long enough to open up all its flavors.
🥛 Add Milk the Right Way (If You Like It Milky)
For traditional chai:
- Boil water with tea leaves and spices.
- Add milk after the tea has steeped (or steep directly in half milk, half water for a creamy cup).
- Bring it to a gentle simmer—this is what creates the iconic chai richness.
Pro tip: Full-fat milk or oat milk gives a luxurious texture.
🍯 Sweeten Thoughtfully
Sugar, honey, jaggery—use what you love, but add it while the chai is still hot so it blends smoothly.
✨ Don’t Rush the Ritual
Great chai is a small act of slowing down.
Let the aroma rise.
Let the spices settle.
Let yourself enjoy the process.
Perfect Chai Ratio (Easy Formula)
For 1 cup:
- 1 cup water
- 1–1.5 tsp loose-leaf chai
- Optional: ¼ cup milk
- Sweetener to taste
For 2 cups, simply double everything.
💛 Final Tip: Customize Your Cup
Whether you like it bold, extra spicy, milky, or light—chai is meant to be personalized. Try different steeping times, milk ratios, and sweeteners until you find your perfect cup.
Our personal note: We prefer our fruit tea collection without milk.
